Although most of the land surrounding the Buttes is privately owned, guests can take part in the organized hikes and bike tours up and around the mountain. Timbuctoo and Smartsville. These two Old West towns of Northern California played an essential role during the Gold Rush period of the mid 1800’s. Timbuctoo, once the large town in Yuba County, was home to the Wells Fargo Office, which was responsible for holding and shipping millions of dollars worth of the gold that was extracted from the rich California land. Today, the remnants of the Wells Fargo Office can still be visited. Just a few miles east of Timbuctoo via Highway 20 lies Smartsville, home of the Church of Immaculate Conception and the Union Church, built in 1861 and 1863 respectively.Yuba Goldfields. Spanning 10,000 acres, the Yuba Goldfields consist of a section of valley around the Yuba River known for its one-of-a-kind appearance and geographical makeup. Inhabited by an array of wildlife including beavers, river otters, bald eagles, turkeys, and mountain lions, this region makes for perfect gold panning conditions with its network of ravines and streams. Although past attempts of retrieving gold from the Yuba Goldfields by means of hydraulic mining have left the area in fragile condition, guests are still encouraged come and witness this unique site.
